Building the studio

A building of its own, raised beside the Institute of Arts

The Studio obtained its official home in the early 2000s with support from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the public research funding agency of the state of São Paulo. The building was erected as an annex to the main building of the Institute of Arts, and its floor plan was conceived by Flo Menezes. The result is a complex of approximately 300 m², designed specifically for the creation, production and diffusion of electroacoustic music.

Inside the studio

A research laboratory with seven acoustically isolated rooms

Institutionally, within Unesp and the Institute of Arts, PANaroma is a research laboratory. The building we occupy was constructed at the same time as the Institute of Arts building in Barra Funda and annexed to it. The laboratory brings together seven independent, acoustically isolated studios.

Room A — a multipurpose studio with a 16.1 system formed by two parallel octophonic arrays. It is the Studio's teaching core: undergraduate and graduate classes, lectures and listening sessions, as well as recording technique, mastering and spatial composition of multichannel works.

Recording room

Microphone collection, Disklavier and real-time electronics testing

The recording room holds a substantial collection of microphones — Neumann, AKG and Sennheiser — and a Disklavier. Besides recording, it serves as a rehearsal room and a space for testing real-time electronics, for which it has a compact octophonic array.

Individual studios

Quadraphony and workstations for student composition

In studios C, D and E, each room has a quadraphonic system, a macOS setup, high-end interfaces and a suite of composition software and plugins. Students generally book four-hour blocks to compose during the week.

Studio B and Tech Room

One-on-one composition tutoring and the Studio's digital archive

Studio B is the faculty space, where one-on-one composition tutorials take place. The Tech Room is the studio technician's room and houses our integrated storage system: there, students log in to access scores, books and patches, and to keep work in progress and recorded sounds.
